TSBDE Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I am already a licensed in Texas—why do I need to be re-fingerprinted? Can I be grandfathered in?

In January 2018, the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Fingerprint-based Applicant Clearinghouse of Texas (FACT) began implementing the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Rap Back Service as part of the Bureau’s Next Generation Identification system. The Rap Back Service can automatically send immediate, nationwide results regarding current licensee/registrant arrest and criminal history information to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE).  TSBDE will not grandfather  licensed dentists or hygienists without a SID number.

If I had my fingerprints taken for a different professional registration/license, can I use those reports to satisfy the TSBDE requirement?

No. If you were fingerprinted by an agency other than TSBDE, you MUST complete fingerprints again. The TSBDE Service Code is unique to the agency that provides this code. Using this code allows TSBDE to receive results directly from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

How long will it take TSBDE to receive the results from my fingerprint background check?

Results with no discrepancies can be received by TSBDE within 24-48 hours. However, allow a minimum of five (5) business days for results to be processed by TSBDE. If you have questions regarding background information, it may result in a longer processing timeframe, see the TSBDE Disciplinary Matrix before contacting TSBDE. I live out-of-state and there is not an IdentoGO near me, am I still required to complete the fingerprint requirement?

Yes. If you are in an area that does not offer digital fingerprinting services, you will need to obtain a fingerprint card from a local law enforcement agency, embassy, or IdentoGo Service Center.  Each organization may charge a fee for their services.  You may request fingerprint cards from the TSBDE via e-mail at licensinghelp@tsbde.texas.gov.  Include your full name and mailing address in your request.  Once you receive the card, you will still need to pre-register with IdentoGO. Upon completion of the registration process, you will receive the address to mail the card.

I have to mail in my fingerprint cards. Where do I mail them to?

Be sure that you have pre-registered before mailing your fingerprint card. Cards received from unregistered licensees will be returned to the sender. Upon completion of this registration you will be provided the address to where the cards will need to be mailed.

What will happen to my license if I do not comply with this requirement?

Failure to comply will result in your license expiring, late fees, and possible cancellation of your license.

What happens if I renew my license on time and do everything right (pay the fee, CE completed and correct Jurisprudence) BUT I didn’t complete the fingerprint process by the expiration date on my license?

Your renewal will NOT be processed and your license may cancel if you have not completed an updated fingerprint session.
